Description

Though some scholars argue that it is ongoing today, the Counter-Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church’s response to the Protestant Reformation, lasted from the Council of Trent (1545) until the Treaty of Westphalia (1648), ending the religious wars in Europe. This period saw the rise of Mannerism in art, with such artists as Michelangelo and Titian. Mannerism eventually paves the way for Baroque art, as seen with Bernini, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rembrandt, and more. Join me for a romp through some of this period and its art.
