Description
After Admiral Perry’s forcible opening of Japan for trade in 1854, Japanese objects and art were enthusiastically taken up by collectors and artists. This two-session class will look at how objects and prints arrived and were consumed in France. Artists such as Whistler and Tissot reveal the early ethusiasm for Japanese artifacts and costumes. Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec responded in different ways to the radically different aesthetic they perceived in Japanese art. Class is given via Zoom. You must have a computer/tablet/phone with audio and video capability.
