Description

The Haunted Mansion opened in Disneyland on August 9, 1969. It was greatly anticipated because Walt Disney had been talking about it since 1957 and the Mansion itself had been seen on the shores of the Rivers of America for at least six years before it opened its moldering hallways to guests. Part of the delay was due to the evolution of illusion and ride systems that made it possible. Another factor was the effort made to design and build several 1964 New York World’s Fair pavilions that were later brought back to Disneyland. When it opened, it was a culmination of the artistry and technology that only the Disney company could achieve at the time.
