Description
The internationalization of crime has resulted in many U.S. fugitives seeking refuge outside our national borders. In this discussion, former Federal Prosecutor Robert Ciaffa will explore the legal, diplomatic and policy issues surrounding international extraditions and prisoner transfer of foreign convicts. Using his first-hand experience as the Department of Justice Attache in both Rome and Mexico City, as well as real-life examples of famous U.S. fugitives, he will explain how an extradition works, who are the main players, and what are the considerations relevant to whether a fugitive will be actually returned to face justice. He also will discuss the international agreements between the U.S. and other countries to return each others’ prisoners.
