This class will examine the European theater from Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939 until the peak of Nazi expansion at El Alamein, Stalingrad, and Kursk. We will explore the major military campaigns, pivotal battles, and strategic decisions that shaped the course of World War II. The course will also cover the political, economic, and social factors that influenced the conflict, as well as the experiences of soldiers and civilians during this tumultuous period. By analyzing primary sources, maps, and historical accounts, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and consequences of the war in Europe. Key topics include the Blitzkrieg tactics, the Battle of Britain, the Eastern Front, and the impact of the war on the Holocaust.
