On January 19th, the day before he left office, Donald Trump issued a report on the teaching of American history titled 1776. In many ways, this controversial view of the history of the United States was a response to the New York Times’s issuance of a surve, titled 1619, of the history of slavery and racism in America. In this talk, Ovitt summarizes and compares the two documents and argues that they succinctly represent the two poles of America’s ‘culture wars.’
George Ovitt has been teaching at Albuquerque Academy since 2000. Before that he taught at Sidwell Friends School and Drexel University. He is the author of eight books, the most recent a collection of short essays on literature and politics, Trotsky’s Sink, written with his colleague, Peter Nash.
