Description

At the end of the Second World War, Europe was decimated. Many in the Allied states believed that postwar policy should focus on preventing Europe (i.e., Germany) from ever again being a world power. Then the Iron Curtain descended, dividing Germany and Europe. The Cold War had begun, and the Western Allies decided that a strong western Europe was needed to ward off any Soviet threat. Thus, NATO and the European Union were born. In this lecture, we will show how these beginnings have led to a highly institutionalized Europe and an equally institutionalized relationship with the United States.
