Description

The Harlem Renaissance (c.1918-37) was a blossoming of African American culture, particularly in the creative arts, that sought to reconceptualize “the Negro” apart from stereotypes. Aaron Douglass, often called the “father of African American art,” painted images reflecting a black history filled with dignity, pride and self-awareness. Likewise, Augusta Savage created sculptures that gave identity to her generation and to the generations of students who inherited her legacy.
