Bartmer Avenue was once a street that neither city nor suburb wanted to claim. Today it’s quiet, but in its past it became three or four blocks of taverns, gambling halls, illicit affairs, and tragedy. Authorities called it “Hell’s Half-Acre,” the title of a new book about the street.
