Kerry James Marshall, a contemporary American artist is best known for his richly worked narrative paintings that investigate many aspects of modern African American life. Marshall paints in a realistic style revealing and questioning concepts of beauty and invisibility. His aim is to create paintings that are not a part of the western art-historical tradition while directly referencing traditions in art history going back as far as the Renaissance.
