Just as the Nazis in Germany took over every other facet of German life and culture, so, too, did they seize classical music and threaten to wield their power with what amounted to a stranglehold on the music itself. We will look at the methods the Nazis used, what taking over the musical life of a cultured nation meant to the National Socialist movement, and how musical figures – composers, conductors, singers, and players – had to improvise means for their personal survival as well as the survival of the music that they loved.
