Description
Archeological sites located in central Israel around Jerusalem continue to reveal details of the Maccabee led resistance to Syrian-Greek assimilation in the second century BCE culminating in the Maccabee Wars. In 164 BCE, the Jews expelled the Syrian-Greeks from Jerusalem, a significant early victory. The subsequent cleansing of the Temple and rededication of the altar is the source of the Chanukah holiday.
