Description

SIUE Professor Emerita Rowena McClinton leads an in-depth discussion about the experiences Native Americans endured when pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620. The presentation unfolds the pilgrims’ encounters with Native Americans of the Samoset, Squanto, and Massasoit tribes leading up to the advent of the first Thanksgiving. She tells of eye-witness journaling recorded between 1620 and 1621 and recounts the first year on Cape Cod and how Thanksgiving evolved to be the first significant feast with Native Americans. Rowena holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky, an MA from Carolina University, and an AB from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research focus and interests are in Native American history and United States history, of which topics she has taught numerous classes.
