Description
On 17 February 1864, the HL Hunley, a submarine engineered and manufactured in the Confederacy, became the first sub in history to sink an enemy warship, the USS Housatonic. It disappeared that same night; but that was only the beginning of its remarkable story, for its fate remained hidden for 131 years. This presentation looks at the Hunley and why it was such an engineering marvel for its time; the fiercely competitive hunt for its remains, even involving a well-known novelist; and how modern forensic science may have finally unlocked the Hunley’s final secrets.
