John Brown and Abraham Lincoln agreed on the evil nature of slavery, but they disagreed on the best methods for confronting it. Brown advocated and practiced violence; Lincoln eschewed violence in favor of politics. Brown tried to start a war against slavery and failed; Lincoln tried to avert a war and failed, too. But the war Lincoln fought ended up producing the result Brown sought.
