The World War II draft brought everybody from the illiterate to the PhD into the same foxhole for a common shared experience and purpose. Then the G. I. Bill made it possible for the survivors to accomplish good things for themselves, their families and their country.
After World War II the American Dream was transformed, unimagined levels of prosperity were reached, and foundations were laid for the lifestyle and life-expectations that we have today. The G. I. Bill, or The Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944, was the largest government “handout” in U. S. History. In 1947, the G. I. Bill benefits were 15% of the federal budget. A look at the G. I. Bill can reveal characteristics of big government at its best, as well as problems inherent in our federal system of government.
