Description

This course will focus on the year 1914. It was not only the beginning of the First World War, it was also the end of an era and the start of a new and dangerous time where many illusions were shattered. The course will be broken into four one-hour segments. First, the world as it was at the start of 1914 – politically, culturally, and economically. Second, how Europe stumbled into a war whose devastating consequences no one could imagine. Third, the initial campaigns of 1914 introduce the horrors of modern warfare to the warring nations of Europe. Fourth, the consequences of the war and how it led to events that dominated the generations to follow.
