Description

On January 22nd, 1879 the British army suffered one of the worse defeats of any modern rifle-armed military force during the colonial period… only in this case, it was defeated by native troops armed primarily with short spears. An even worse defeat than Custer three years before. The London papers referred to the event by saying “The Zulus are a match of us in generalship, and more than a match for us in cunning.” Except for rifles and artillery, the British and the Zulu military were remarkably similar… except the British were slaughtered.
