For Whom the Bell Tolls. 17 July 1936 – 1 April 1939. The Spanish Civil War can be seen as one of the other revolutions of Europe. On a par with the French and Russian revolutions. It certainly matched those two for deaths and long-term effects on the people and the state. In a sense, it was a battleground for all the ideologies of the 20th century. And an example of the failure of the democracies of the time to prevent bloodshed.
