What were the major influences on the stories? Victorian society, Scotland Yard, early detective fiction? Was there a real-life model for Holmes? Conan Doyle’s professor Dr. Joseph Bell? Doyle himself? What are major incarnations of Holmes in stage/movies/TV, science fiction, children’s cartoons, even wartime propaganda? What are Sherlockian societies? The World of Sherlock Holmes, will include vintage illustrations, video clips and cartoons; and discussion of a selected story. The goal is a better understanding and appreciation of this phenomenon.
